Some new curtains I just finished! The blue and white ones are for the guest room, but we're using them in our room now. The tree ones are for the baby's room!

Quilt 3...

Ok, so I guess I've made two quilts before this.

The first quilt was for my first niece. I started it before she was born, therefore before we knew she was indeed a she. It's a bad picture, please forgive me. It matches her room :)


My second quilt was this Christmas tree skirt in a Hawaiian pattern - ulu (breadfruit). I have some vague recollection about ulu being something you're supposed to start with. But goodness, this one took me forever. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention I do all of my sewing BY HAND??


The new quilt is for my second niece. A boy at school had a quilt in roughly this pattern for his naptime blanket. This is my interpretation of it. It ended up being more "square" than I thought it would end up... but I still like it. Plus, it's not really girly (aka using pinks and purples...) but I hope that's ok with her.

Surprise! I thought it would be fun to make a mini-version of her quilt for her dolls or bears or whatever. They're slightly different (aka the red parts are different fabric) and the big one has yellow binding where I took the backing and folded it for the binding on the small one.

The backing of both quilts is this cute ladybug pattern. It may not be pinks and purples, but it's still cute! I hope you like them Mari!!! Happy Birthday!

Who wants a quilt?

Well, over at Old Red Barn Co, they're giving away a quilt!!! It's easy enough - you just have to comment on her post, and you're entered in the drawing! Woohoo! Doesn't it look lovely? Someday I'll make a quilt that pretty.

Porridge?

Because it's A. Norris here (all you HC people should get that joke - get it A Norris "Freezin"?), I decided to take a break from my lovely quilted Christmas tree skirt and make something I learned how to make in 7th grade Home Economics (thanks Mrs. Stanislaw!). I made a heating pad/pouch/bag/thing. Basically, you take a piece of fabric, fold it in half, sew three sides of it, pour rice inside, and heat it in the microwave. I currently think it's one of the best things I've ever made, particularly because it was in single digit temperatures here last night. It gets cold, this keeps me warm.

The first night I made it, I took it to bed, and DH was appalled by the smell. He couldn't figure out what it smelled like, and then said, "It smells like the stuff you eat for breakfast." I eat oatmeal for breakfast (warm oatmeal because it's a cold winter), and I suppose you could call it porridge. (Visions of the Three Bears and Goldilocks as well as Oliver Twist are what appear when I think of the word porridge. "Please sir, may I have some more?")

Anyway, for the last few nights, I've put what is now deemed "porridge" into the microwave for 3 minutes while I do my nightly ablutions. After it's done, I tuck it down into bed by my feet and occasionally feel dh's feet cozy up next to its warmth. I do wish I could do something about the smell though. It does smell like rice!!

This is the quilted Christmas tree skirt I'm making (still making, and it's almost February. Gee, I'm early for next year...).


It's in the "ulu" pattern - breadfruit! There are 4 sets that look like this in a ring around the skirt. I think it looks like reindeer too.
